Live burlesque performance by Miss Lily Verlaine!
Seattle premiere!
Saturday, Aug 09 at 08:00PM
Director Beth B takes us into the 21st century underground and reveals a secret world where cutting-edge performers are taking hold of a formerly taboo art form, Burlesque, and driving it to new frontiers of satire, parody, and transgression.
Featuring Rose Wood, Julie Atlas Muz, Mat Fraser, Dirty Martini, Bunny Love, Bambi the Mermaid, World Famous *Bob* & Tiggerthese eight artists use their nakedness to operate on the far edge of Burlesque, combining politics and physical comedy to question inhibitive gender norms.
Capturing rehearsals, backstage preparations, private struggles and triumphs, and the extraordinary performances, the film gives access to the clubs and other hidden spaces where New Burlesque culture thrives. Ancient moral, religious and sexual shibboleths are subverted, and a new generation of the cultural avant-garde comes to light.
Lily Verlaine is a classical ballet dancer trained at The School of The San Francisco Ballet, Walnut Hill School, Ballet Chicago, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Steps On Broadway and other notable schools. As a solo burlesque artist and creator, she choreographed, costumed, designed and co-produced the evening-length works Through The Looking Glass: The Burlesque Alice In Wonderland (2009) and Land of The Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker (2006) which she toured to Chicago in the winter of 2008.
As a burlesque performer, Miss Verlaine has shared stages with Dita Von Teese and other distinguished ladies of burlesque including Dirty Martini, Michelle L'Amour and Julie Atlas Muz. In 2008 she was a featured artist in the documentary A Wink and a Smile and was interviewed for the 2009 documentary Waxie Moon. As a choreographer, Miss Verlaine has joyously set work upon many Seattle notables such as Indigo Blue, Kitten LaRue and Miss-ter Waxie Moon. For a number of years now Miss Verlaine has also been an educator, currently conducting twice-weekly ballet classes at The Academy of Burlesque.
