The 2nd Attack of the Killer B-Movies: Blue Velvet
September 2009 comes another Foul Play, the 2nd Attack of the Killer B-Movies, a trio of deadly B-movies at their biggest, baddest and most brilliant! Three classics, Blue Velvet, the Bride of Frankenstein and Barbarella, are brought to life by an intrepid acting ensemble and "streamlined" by Sean Owens (Best Comic Playwright, SF Weekly). The 2AOTKBM plays three nights a week for three weekends eachand all three deftly handled by a fearless stable of actors.
This year's Killer B-Movie features are a stellar triptych of fiery female figures-- from a shattered chanteuse, a newly-reborn newlywed, and an intergalactic ingenue! This year, Foul Play is digging up dark secrets, be they from the grave, deep scape, or America's own backyard. Three separate evenings of standalone theater, special designed to form an unforgettable trilogysee the whole set, or forever wish you had! There are only THREE WEEKEND EACH of this spectacular stage phenomenon, in one of SF's most intimate and accessible theater settings."
Equal parts camp and cunning, each of these film classics are tributes brought to life by a collaboration of local artists and designers, and represent some of the best talents of real underground SF theater. Drawing on a multitude of story-telling effects such as shadow work, puppetry, dance, and animation, the 2AOTKBM combines our diverse skills to create a unique only-in-SF vision. Return audience members will appreciate the repurposing of key props and set pieces, as an Easter-egg bonus feature.
Opening Sept 10, explore suburbia's seedy underbelly with our mesmerizing adaptation of BLUE VELVET. Clean-nosed teen Jeffrey Beaumont (Christopher Kuckenbaker) finds a severed ear during a visit home to Lumberton, and it quickly embroils him and soft-hearted schoolgirl Sandy Williams (Sean Owens) in a dangerous web of intrigue and perversion. Torch singer Dorothy Vallens (Alexia Staniotes) is under the thumb of wild card Frank Booth (Don Wood) and desperately needs Jeffrey to pull her outbut all the while she's pulling him further in. Iconic and unsettling images punctuate this seminal masterwork, and every filmic tableau is brilliantly reimagined and reengineered by director Michelle Talgarow, who conceived and executed last year's Killer hit, The Birds. Blue Velvet features the videography of Jeremy Solterbeck and Christopher Kuckenbaker.
