SHAKESPEARE'S 450TH: SCENES AND SONNETS, MUSIC AND DANCE WITH MEMBERS OF PIFFARO AND GUESTS SAT, OCT 4, 8:30 PM THOMAS GREAT HALL Members of Piffaro, the Renaissance band that provided authentic period music for the Globe Theater's recent productions on Broadway, kick off our evening with music as Shakespeare would have enjoyed it. Jim Christy, known for staging skilled renditions of the Bard's works, directs leading actors in sonnets and scenes. And just as many of Shakespeare's plays ended with a "masque," so our celebration concludes with dances taught by a Renaissance dancing master. Bring your dancing shoes or just sit back and enjoy.
CAMILLE A. BROWN & DANCERS: BLACK GIRL AND MR. TOL E. RANCE (EXCERPTS) FRI, DEC 5, 8 PM MCPHERSON AUDITORIUM, GOODHART HALL Soul-stirring, show-stopping choreographer/dancer Camille A. Brown addresses the politics of pleasure and contemporary notions of beauty for black women in her newest work Black Girl, seen here prior to its New York premiere. Sharing the bill is Mr. TOL E. RAncE melding comedy, animation and historical dance styles with live music to look at what black performers have had to tolerate from the past to the present. THIS PRESENTATION MADE POSSIBLE BY THE NEW ENGLAND FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS' NATIONAL DANCE PROJECT.
WINTRY MIX/PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL FRISAT, JAN 3031, 8 PM HEPBURN TEACHING THEATER, GOODHART HALL This curated sampler of what's new in Philly and New York performance offers two different nights of mostly 12-minutes-max sets that cross boundaries between theater, dance and music. On a smaller scale, scruffier and more adventurous than the Series' usual, each show includes free food and drink, and ends with a DJ'd dance party.
JASPER STRING QUARTET FRI, FEB 27, 8 PM THOMAS GREAT HALL The dark complexity and expressive power of Gyorgy Ligeti's Quartet No. 2 combines with the sprightliness of Beethoven's early Quartet in G Major opus 18 and the lush sonority of Dvorak's Quartet No. 13 in G Major in this concert of emotionally resonant works. The Jasper String Quartet, formed at the Oberlin Conservatory and recipient of multiple honors, plays with sparkling vitality and great verve.
EMEL MATHLOUTHI FRI, MARCH 27, 8 PM MCPHERSON AUDITORIUM, GOODHART HALL Emel Mathlouthi's voice spells revolution and freedom. This young singer/songwriter's "Kelmti Horra" ("My Word is Free") became an anthem of the Arab Spring. Growing up in the suburbs of Tunis and performing from the age of 8, she moved to France at the age of 25 and now performs globally with her band. Her powerhouse presence and inventive melding of rock, Asian and trip-hop come through as she sings in Arabic, French and English.
