James Patterson, Featured Guest
In January, 2010, The New York Times Magazine featured James Patterson on its cover and hailed him as having "transformed book publishing." Time magazine named him as "The Man Who Can't Miss." In 2011, it was estimated that one in four of all hardcover suspense/thriller novels sold was written by James Patterson. He is the first author to achieve ten million ebook sales and holds the Guinness record for the most #1 New York Times bestsellers of any author. In addition to the perennially popular Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club, and Michael Bennett series of thrillers, Patterson is the current bestselling author in the young adult and middle grade categories.
Patterson has also been called the busiest man in publishing, and that's not just because of his own books. For the past decade, he has devoted his time to championing books and reading. From the James Patterson Pageturner Awards, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade and his free webcast titled ONE ON ONE: Fundamentals, his website ReadKiddoRead.com, to the $170,000 in College Book Bucks scholarships and his regular donations of hundreds of thousands of books to schools in the states and to troops overseas, Patterson has shared his passion of books and reading and supported those who do the same. He personally funded a major ad campaign re-printing a CNN.com opinion piece. The ad ran in the New York Times, The New Yorker, and USA Today as a call to action to parents to make their kids' reading a top priority.
With $1 million in scholarship money in 2013 alone, the James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarships support up-and-coming teachers who help give kids the foundation for lifelong reading enjoyment. The Pattersons have also established scholarships in education at 19 colleges.
His 2014 titles published prior to this September appearance include: First Love, Private L. A. (Private series), NYPD Red 2 (NYPD Red series), Middle School: Ultimate Showdown! (#5 in the Middle School series), Unlucky 13 (Women's Murder Club series), Invisible, Middle School: Save Rafe! (#6 in the Middle School series), Homeroom Diaries, Private Down Under (Private series), Treasure Hunters: Danger Down the Nile (Treasure Hunters series), Burn (Michael Bennett series).
Bookmarks extends special appreciation to Wells Fargo for grant funding that provided 120 tickets to Forsyth County middle and high school students to attend this event. Grant funding also helped to provide books written by James Patterson to these students' school libraries for check out.
