Rare Films from the Baseball Hall of Fame
Sponsored by Sandy Friedman in Memory of Bob Friedman
We've reached the dog days of the baseball season and the pennant races are heating up! What better way to celebrate our national pastime than with a selection of vintage newsreels that bring baseball's rich history to life? Introduced by David Filipi
Baseball superfan Dave Filipi of the Wexner Center for the Arts delivers a thoughtfully curated program of Rare Baseball films culled from the Baseball Hall of Fame vaults. The movies have been around almost as long as professional baseball, leaving us with a wonderful visual history of our national pastime. Highlights of this amazing program include a Roger Maris interview with Mel Allen; home movies of the New York Yankees 1955 Tour of Japan; a newsreel of the 1954 All-Star Game in Cleveland featuring an interview with the game's MVP Al Rosen of Cleveland; a selection of Gillette Razor Commercials featuring Casey Stengel, Mel Allen, Whitey Ford, Warren Spahn, Hank Aaron, Early Wynn, Ralph Kiner, Willie Mays, Roy Campanella, Brooks Robinson and Richie Ashburn; a newsreel of a New York Giants vs. Cleveland Indians Spring Training game in 1955; an excerpt from "Day with the Giants" featuring Giants manager Leo Durocher, Larraine Day and Cleveland's Bob Feller; an early 1960s Puss'n Boots Commercial featuring New York Yankee Yogi Berra and a cat; as well as other amazing films featuring Kansas City Athletic Whitey Herzog, Washington Senators Harmon Killebrew and Bob Allison, Pirate great Pie Traynor and many more!
