Soul Down: Naima Shalhoub & Jackie Gage
Naima Shalhoub and Jackie Gage,two up-and-coming soul vocalists who first met in friendly competition during Jazz Search West 2014, formed a musical friendship rooted in sound and heart. Tonight, these two rising stars unite once again in the space they first met, The Sound Room (Oakland, CA) in a tribute to jazz, art and soul. Soul Down is an expression of the modern movement of music in the Bay Area; when the sun goes down, the sultry music that accompanies it empowers cultures, genres, and the force of music within the world.
Naima Shalhoub is a singer/songstress, musician, performing artist and educator. After receiving her M.A. in Postcolonial Anthropology in San Francisco, Naima turned her focus toward song and music as vessels for story-telling and movement building. In 2010 she began performing all over the Bay, receiving features on radio stations and reputable venues, and began building fan bases internationally such as Beirut and Kashmir. In 2012 she released her first single and music video "herstory of soul", and is currently teaching, performing and working on her debut full-length album.
Jackie Gage has a velvety voice that goes down like smooth wine. This 23-year-old soul-meets-jazz singer Jackie Gage a fast rising star in the Bay Area. It's easy to be caught in her sound, with a grace and beauty that channels torch singers of decades past. This San Jose native is an awardee of the inaugural Leigh Weimers Emerging Artist Award by the San Jose Rotary Club (July 2013), a 2014 Jazz Search West finalist which awarded her performances at Yoshi's Oakland, the Freight and Salvage, and The Sound Room with notable past performances at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest (2012, 2013), among others. Gage is working on her debut album, Ladies, set for release in 2015.
