PART OF HANDMADE WORLDS: A FESTIVAL OF PUPPET THEATRE (For more information about all the festival activities, go to www.handmadeworlds.org)
Finding Home is a trilogy of pieces, poignant, joyful, and humorous, about puppeteer Monica Leo's parents and their immigration experiences. The first piece, "My Father's Imaginary Friend," uses candlelight and shadows to interpret the story of her father's hope and survival during his incarceration in a concentration camp. The second piece, "German Eggheads in Rural Texas," traces the family's life in a Lutheran parsonage in rural Texas. Monica uses her mother's illustrations to create puppets and scenery that tell droll stories of language and cultural mix-ups and misunderstandings. The third piece, "Mutti's Muscles," uses dolls and other objects to follow her mother's rebirth as a metal sculptor and political activist in the United States after her father's death.
The Eulenspiegel Puppets, formed in 1974, select their performances from a large repertoire of international folktales. Based at Owl Glass Puppetry Center in West Liberty, Iowa, the puppets tour nationally and internationally. Eulenspiegel is known for original scripts, whimsical scenery, and puppets of many styles, including miniature marionettes, near lifesize hand-and-rod puppets, shadow puppets and giant parade puppets. Puppeteer Monica Leo and her associates work together on Eulenspiegel creations, writing scripts, designing and building puppets and props, and collaborating with musicians, playwrights, poets, directors, designers and other theater companies both here and abroad.
Eulenspiegel has been active in the Iowa Arts Council's Artist in the Schools and Communities Program since 1977. During the 1980's and early 90's the company was also active in Wyoming's Artist in Education Program. From 1981 through '91, the puppeteers toured on the Iowa Arts Council's Summer Touring Arts Team. Leo is approved as a "Character Counts Through the Arts" artist and has completed the Creative Classrooms program for Curriculum-infused puppetry residencies.
Eulenspiegel is the recipient of the 2000 Ioe Arts Award for long term commitment to excellence in the arts.
HANDMADE WORLDS: A Festival of Puppet Theatre is produced by Open Eye Figure Theatre in collaboration with the Great Plains Region of The Puppeteers of America and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.
