Composting in the Vineyard
Program from 8:30AM to 12:30PM
Program will begin promptly at 8:30!

7:45AM Registration with coffee and pastries

Lunch will be served after the program

Space is limited to 50 attendees

Learn the fundamentals of the compost process, monitoring, and use for soil water conservation, building soil structure, nutrient management, and carbon sequestration.  Participants will learn in-depth composting theory and will be provided with tools to help trouble shoot the composting process.

This interactive workshop will walk growers through the compost making process, discuss challenges, theory, and benefits. Includes a presentation from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance on their sustainability handbook and a vineyard composting demonstration.

Bring your questions and your hats for the demonstration! We will be carpooling to the vineyard composting demonstration site.

Presenters include:

Will Bakx has created innovative composting systems for over 30 years. He is the co-owner of Sonoma Compost, co-founder and current board member of the California Organic Recycling Council (CORC) and the California Compost Coalition (CCC).

Tom Gore is the Viticulture Manager at Clos du Bois winery. Gore is from the Alexander Valley and has been managing vineyards since 1998. He is currently oversees about 1,400 acres on 12 different properties in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties.

Ellen Hopkins is a zero-waste and compost consultant who assists clients in reducing waste and finding viable solutions for composting organics. For some clients viable composting solutions may include composting organic waste on-site. Ellen's compost certifications include the US Compost Council's Compost Operations Training, BayFriendly MasterComposter, and California Resource Recovery Associations.

Jeffrey Creque is the co-found of the Marin Carbon Project, as well a director at the Carbon Cycle Institute. He is an agricultural and rangeland consultant and brings over 30-years of experience to reach the goals of the Marin Carbon Project: to enhance carbon sequestration of rangeland, agricultural, and forest soils to address climate change concerns.  

Jodi Wilson is the Project Coordinator at the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). She has been with CSWA since 2011 and assists with implementing the California Sustainable Winegrowing Program and third-party certification program. She has a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Management from the University of San Francisco.

Kendall Lambert is the Water Program Coordinator at Community Alliance with Family Farmers. She runs an education and outreach program for winegrape growers on-farm water management topics. She has a Master's Degree in Environmental Policy, where she focused her research on climate change impacts on irrigation demand in Sonoma County vineyards.
