CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES- by Jim Stowell & Jessica Zuehlke with music & lyrics by Drew Jansen
Hold onto your oven mitts and stay out of the kitchen! CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES is a musical celebration of the church basement kitchens everywhere and the wonderful, unsung women who work there. Set in 1964-65, the show is a hilarious musical comedy and heartfelt reflection on the four women who tirelessly prepare the food and solve problems for the congregation at a rural Minnesota church.
The church basement ladies are portrayed by Waypoint regulars and include the elderly matriarch of the kitchen (Amy Lyons), a young bride-to-be (Sarah Carver, who also serves as Choreographer), a jack-of-all trades farmer's wife (Waypoint's Artistic Director, Melanie David), the best dressed cook in the church and Signe's mother (Elizabeth von Isser) with the coffee-loving Pastor Gunderson (Wayne McKinley). Susan Wedel serves as the production's Music Director.
Together, these four "steel magnolias" of the church stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on due course as they cope with the changing world and changes within the church. In the span of a year, they plan a record-breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter fundraiser and a steaming hot July wedding feast.
CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES will be Waypoint's first production in their new performance venue, Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind's Berger Performing Arts Center, located at 1200 West Speedway, two lights west of I-10, and is directed by Waypoint's Founder and Artistic Director, Melanie David.
