Steven Caras: See Them Dance!
The Stapleton School is proud to announce that Steven Caras will join us to kick off our 2014 Balanchine© Focused Summer Intensive. In honor of his appearance, we will host a very special "Evening with Steven Caras" on Monday, July 28th. Steven will speak about his experience as a dancer with NYCB and being mentored by Mr. Balanchine. A complimentary screening of the documentary, Steven Caras: See Them Dance is also included.

Steven Caras' career in the arts began with his timely good fortune in joining the New York City Ballet during the company's true golden age. For the next fourteen years under the leadership of New York City Ballet's legendary founder George Balanchine**, he would dance worldwide in more than forty ballets choreographed by Balanchine in addition to being featured in numerous Jerome Robbins works.

During this inspirational period of his life, Steven Caras was also mentored as a photographer by Mr. Balanchine along with the company's co-founder, Lincoln Kirstein. Their encouragement led Caras to a luminous career as one of the most revered image makers of dance in our time, whose work continues to appear world-wide in major publications, films and documentaries, exhibitions and private collections.

Inspired by Steven Caras' extraordinary career in the world of dance, film makers Deborah Novak and John Witek have chronicled his remarkable life and story in their international and Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary, Steven Caras: See Them Dance. In intimate detail, Caras candidly shares professional and personal anecdotes and milestones, from his difficult childhood to his days as a dancer with the New York City Ballet under the mentorship of the legendary George Balanchine, to the often bumpy path he courageously continued on, leading to a luminous second career as the foremost dance photographer of his time. Through a mosaic of Caras' breathtaking images, he reveals much of the ballet dancer's world both onstage and behind the scenes, in tandem with compelling interviews with numerous dance icons including Jacques d'Amboise, Patricia McBride, Mia Michaels, Kay Mazzo, Peter Martins, Allegra Kent, Sean Lavery, Elizabeth Streb, Gary Chryst, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Virginia Johnson among others. The film received an Emmy Award in the category of Arts and Entertainment and the Grand Remi Award for 'Best Television Film' at the 45th Annual Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival.
