John Ware Reimagined
John Ware Reimagined is a play with music about a young black girl named Joni growing up in a cowboy-obsessed city. In love with horses and the cowboy mystique, she gradually realizes Black folk are absent from popular culture depictions of that world. While struggling to juggle what she sees as two incompatible identities, she discovers the existence of a great Black cowboy who was instrumental in creating the brand of her city.
This compelling World Premiere features flood, fire and funk, all driven by the riveting performances of Janelle Cooper, Orville Cameron and Kirsten Alter, and a musical landscape created and performed live by Calgary's inaugural Poet Laureate Kris Demeanor and folk-soul artist Miranda Martini.
This play is part of the Black Canadian Theatre Series, an unprecedented event in Alberta's theatre history.
