KEITH . BOWERS "Dummy: The Story of the Biggest Error I Ever Made" IIt was my first week on the job as night editor at a daily newspaper in Oregon. I'd just been promoted from reporter to supervise a deranged night crew of copy editors, reporters, photographers and production workers. I'd be the last word in crucial decisions on deadline. If a major story broke, I'd make the call to tear up the front page and get it published. To show the editor-in-chief that he'd made the right decision in promoting me, I wanted to make a really big impression. And boy, did I ever.
LESLIE . BEAM "If It's Got Beans, It Ain't Chili" Really, how hard could it be? Just throw some meat and spices into a pot, stew it for a while and voila! No doubt the cowboy cooks used organic tri-tip steak, imported spices and a special good luck spoon, right? Picture I Love Lucy and the candy conveyer belt episode. Now replace Lucy with Leslie and bonbons with chili and there it is - Leslie's first chili cook off.
EMIL . GUILLERMO "Emil Amok: Murder on Mission Street" As a journalist and a former host of NPR's "All Things Considered," Emil Guillermo covered the news. But the story's different when the lead in his life's newscast becomes his cousin's murder in a South of Market apartment building.
MARTHA . RYNBERG "Lady Parts #36" Directed by Liz Rose-Cohen Her therapist gives her the assignment to have fun. Fun? Shit, fun is hard. Unwilling to back down from a challenge, Martha and her wife head out on a "fun date" - what could be more fun than an airplane hanger full of trampolines? And why isn't Martha wearing any pants?
CHERRY . ZONKOWSKI "Breakfast with Voldemort" It's Easter weekend in Santa Cruz, and Cherry celebrates in true sleazy style with a night of lemonade, lasers and sex games that starts at the Boardwalk and ends in the motel room across the street. And then things get weird. When they find themselves mysteriously dosed and deranged, Cherry and her man scramble to figure out just what happened to them and how they can possibly keep it together as the countdown to checkout just keeps ticking.
