That Just Happened
In a city world-renowned for its satire, "That Just Happened" stands as Chicago's premier weekly, scripted news-based comedy show. Now in its fourth season at CIC, "That Just Happened" tackles the week's stories in politics, sports, entertainment, and current events and turns even the darkest stories into material that is equal parts biting and whimsical. With a combination of news-style jokes, character sketches, improvisation, and pre-taped video segments, "That Just Happened" writes and performs an entirely new, hour-long show based on the events of the week, bringing an element of controlled chaos and immediacy that is wholly unique in Chicago's live comedy scene.
The show is hosted by Chicago comedians Harrison George and Steph Cook, and features a veteran cast and writing staff comprised of performers from The Second City's and iO Theatre's house teams. Under the tutelage of director Phil Meister, the players of "That Just Happened" have developed a show that will feel familiar to fans of Conan O'Brien and "Weekend Update," with the added elements of live performance and improvisation. Highlights from previous seasons, a time-traveling celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Iraq War, movie reviews from your little brother, and a Hurricane Sandy victim who just wants to do some trick-or-treatin'. With the news currently filled with looming budget crises, racial injustice in the court system, and Mayor Ford's crack problems this upcoming season of "That Just Happened" promises to deliver the stories that matter with none of the respect and distinction that they deserve.
