Marc Edward Heuck, founder of The Projector Has Been Drinking film and culture blog, presents the fifth installment of his new screening series: CINEMA TREMENS! Offering a carefully crafted brew of cinematic styles we hope you find intoxicating.
Our June double feature (which actually takes place in early July, but who cares, it's summer!) offers two fine-tuned films about street racing in specific locales, based on real-life events, where the mindset of the city will affect your driving just as much as your nerve.
First, Harry Hamlin can outrun any other driver on the twisted path of Mulholland Drive, but choosing between a life of stability with girlfriend Deborah Van Valkenburgh or fighting a constant war with delusional former champion Dennis Hopper is the turn that might prove fatal, in KING OF THE MOUNTAIN, also starring Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, and, in a rare non-"Elvira" appearance, Cassandra Peterson. Director and USC Professor Noel Nosseck AND Deborah Van Valkenburgh will be appearing IN PERSON Wednesday the 2nd to talk about the challenges of making this film, including handling Dennis Hopper in his most infamous period of unpredictable behavior. KING OF THE MOUNTAIN is NOT AVAILABLE ON DVD, so this is an Ultra-Rare opportunity to see this underrated film on the big screen!
Then, cocky, speed-crazy Southern teenager Lucas Black is sent to Japan in the hopes of reining in his reckless behavior, but instead finds himself plunged into a kinetic car culture, where entrenched traditions of honor intertwine with modern opportunities to burn rubber, in Justin Lin's acclaimed THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT, also starring Nathalie Kelley, Sonny Chiba, and of course, Sung Kang as Han! Film critic and Deadline Hollywood reporter Jen Yamato will be appearing IN PERSON Wednesday the 2nd to introduce the film and illustrate its special appeal in the long-running and beloved FAST AND FURIOUS film series! Director Justin Lin, editor Fred Raskin, and co-star Nikki Griffin will be appearing for a post film Q&A!
Please join us on July 2nd (and if you miss our presentation, the films will screen again on the 3rd, just without guests) for a night of muscle and motors at the movies!
