Butterflies and Camels - A Festival for All at SMARTS Farm
On Saturday, July 19, Humane Smarts will host a fun-filled afternoon and evening at SMARTS Farm, the community garden and educational center located at the corner of F Street and 15th in San Diego's East Village. Taking place from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., "Butterflies and Camels" will feature hay rides, a petting zoo (even camels!), music, a chuck wagon, craft beer, a puppet show presented by young people who attended our summer programs, and maybe even a Monarch butterfly or two, recently emerged from their cocoons!
"Butterflies and Camels" is a great opportunity for the San Diego community to get know the folks and programs at SMARTS Farm. Created in 2013 when the local nonprofit Humane Smarts transformed a vacant lot into a thriving garden, SMARTS Farm is focused on education, nutrition, creativity, self-sufficiency, and the understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
At SMARTS Farm, young people are introduced to all kinds of living things - from beneficial bugs to friendly farm animals - and learn to plant, harvest, cook, and eat a range of healthy, delicious foods. In our first year of operation, nearly 300 underserved children participated in our programs, including photography, judo, art and puppet creation, and after-school coaching from Kahn Academy and IXL.
In addition, nearly 50 community gardeners - including local researchers, police officers, members of the military, and East Village neighbors - lease planter boxes at SMARTS Farm, creating wonderful opportunities for interaction with our youth and encouraging community revitalization.
Join us July 19 for "Butterflies and Camels"! Tickets are $10 for adults. Children attend for free.
