CITY AND COUNTRY | New Performance and Video Works by David Finkelstein
Friday , July 11th, 2014 / 8 PM 226 Green Street, Brooklyn thepictureshow.org
Filmmaker and performer David Finkelstein collaborates with actors Cassie Tunick and Ian W. Hill and musician Danny Tunick to uncover hidden worlds and landscapes. Finkelstein's videos combine meticulously crafted digital imagery with original music and improvised text to explore inner reality in an elliptical and poetic manner. He bases these works on improvised performances in which the actors collaborate to craft a verbal landscape from an inner world. He then composes a musical score and creates a complex visual environment to help the viewer perceive the tremendous thematic and emotional unity which underlies the fluidity of the improvisation.
Works Shown:
The Unfolded Landscape (2014, live performance, approx. 25 min) In a live performance work, Finkelstein and the two Tunicks use their collective imaginations to reveal a hidden world.
Invincible City (2012, 21 minutes) In a city of dead ideas, dry, brittle conversations, and trembling, crystalized buildings, two men seek the proper approach to take towards the end of the world. Should one sit back, writing notes in a crumbling notebook, or should one rush headlong into the flames? Featuring Ian W. Hill.
Privy (2014, 20 minutes) WORLD PREMIERE A young woman is forced to live with an unsympathetic stepmother, and spends much of her time in an outhouse, escaping into books and her own vivid fantasy life. Privy uses oblique, poetic language, fanciful images and musical interludes to depict her daydreams and her evolving plans for escape. Featuring Ian W. Hill, Michael Spaeth and Barbara Vann
