UKULELE OPEN MIC PICNIC (12:15pm Historic City Hall Lawn) : FREE Watchers: Bring a picnic lunch and your lawn chairs to this years open mic contest. Sit back and enjoy the show! Players: Come show off your awesome ukulele skills or just sing and strum your favorite tune. Prizes include an Eddy Finn Uke Bass, a hippie gig bag and ukulele songbooks. You must register to compete by emailing a video or recording of your ukulele-related act to ryan@ukuleleplay.com . . . only 15 slots. Plan to perform one selection.
CLASS SESSION ONE (2pm Historic City Hall), choose from:
Classic Rock: 60's & 70's (Steven Butler of the Utah Ukulele Association) : FREE Enjoy learning some classic rock with the Utah's master of the ukulele jam. All levels of player are welcome!
Chord Melody Playing : Ashokan Farewell (Max Willard) : FREE In this class for intermediate-advanced players, you will learn a beautiful chord melody tune known as Ashokan Farewell. This waltz was written as a farewell for students on the last day of the Ashokan Music Festival.
Cigar Box Ukulele Part 1 & 2 (Daniel Hulbert of Circuits & Strings) : $45 for materials Assemble a concert sized ukulele with a cigar box body. The finished ukulele will have Aquila Strings and geared tuners. We will be sawing, drilling, gluing, and stringing up our instruments over two class periods. No previous woodworking or instrument building required. ONLY 5 SPOTS AVAILABLE!
CLASS SESSION TWO (3pm Historic City Hall), choose from:
Creating Simple Intros, Endings & Other Good Stuff (Bill & Cheryl Stephens) : FREE This workshop will cover how to create song introductions and endings through a series of simple progressive steps. Get into and out of a song smoothly, along with fun and easy format touches within the body of the song itself.
Stylizing a Song with Rhythm (Vicki Thorpe) : FREE This class is for Beginning to Intermediate players. We will be taking a familiar song "When the Saints Go Marching in" and play it as a traditional New Orleans Funeral March and then in Dixieland Jazz and other styles.
CLASS SESSION THREE (4pm Historic City Hall), choose from:
Christmas in July : 2, 3 & 4 Chord Carols (M. Ryan Taylor of UkulelePlay.com) : FREE All levels of players are invited to learn and sing some Christmas carols at the midpoint of the year. Beginners will appreciate the simplicity of the chord selections. Intermediate players may learn a thing or two about bringing simple songs to life through cool strums, fingerpicking and other right-hand techniques.
12 Bar Blues (Max Willard) : FREE Learn the basics of this classic style of playing and improvising! Nothing says it like the blues!
PB&J UKULELE JAM (5pm Historic City Hall Lawn) Hosted by the Utah Ukulele Association : FREE Join us for an informal dinner/jam on the lawn. UkulelePlay.com will be providing bread, peanut butter and jam to make sandwiches with, or bring your own dinner. Steve Butler of the Utah Ukulele Association will host the jam. If you'd like a share a specific song for the jam, please bring 10-20 copies to share.
