AVA AND GABRIEL
Friday, June 27, 2014 @ 6:30PM
Upon request of the parish priest, Surinamese painter Gabriel Goedbloed arrives from Holland to paint a mural of the Virgin Mary in the local church. Drama unfolds when the clergy and locals are perplexed by the painter's race; the painter is black, originating from Surinam, but resettled in The Hague, where he received an education in the fine arts. Goedbloed's presence propels tensions in the close knit, traditional Antillian society. Drama unfolds when the painter asks the recently engaged Miss Ava Recordina, to be his model for the mural of the Virgin Mary. As the plot progresses, Gabriel Goedbloe falls victim to local controversies, hypocrisies and intrigues that have arisen around his ethno-racial identity and his works of art.
