6:30pm AVA AND GABRIEL: A LOVE STORY-FREE SCREENING Upon request of the parish priest, Surinam painter Gabriel Goedbloed arrives from Holland to paint a mural of the Virgin Mary in the local church. Drama unfolds when the clergy and locals are perplexed by the painter's race; the painter is black, originating from Surinam, but resettled in The Hague, where he received an education in the fine arts. Goedbloed's presence propels tensions in the close knit, traditional Antillian society. Drama unfolds when the painter asks the recently engaged Miss Ava Recordina, to be his model for the mural of the Virgin Mary. As the plot progresses, Gabriel Goedbloe falls victim to local controversies, hypocrisies and intrigues that have arisen around his ethno-racial identity and his works of art.(Holland/Curacao, 1990, 100 min, Felix de Rooy, dir., Drama, Comedy) (Warning: Adult Content)

2pm THE OTHER WORLD (L'AUTRE MONDE) Yasmine and Rachid, two young children of Algerian immigrants, are in love and live a quiet life in Paris, France. When Rachid follows a sudden impulse to draft into the Algerian army, Yasmine goes to look for him after a long period of silence. Alone in a country whose language she doesn't speak, Yasmine searches for her love and prays for his well-being, all the while becoming enveloped in a novel world where nothing appears normal and death is ever present. (France/Algeria, 2001, 90 min, Merzak Allouache, dir., Romance, Drama)
4pm ONE PEOPLE (WAN PIPEL) When Roy, a black Surinamese student, learns that his mother is seriously ill, he borrows money from his Dutch girlfriend to leave Amsterdam and return home. However, once he arrives in his native country, Roy finds himself enduring an inner struggle. Culturally acclimated to the Netherlands, Roy questions his ethnic identity as he becomes reacquainted with the history of his nation, the customs of his parents and ancestors, as well as with the traditions of the Hindu community when he takes up with Rubia, a Hindu nurse. While the country of Surinam may be "one people" or "wan pipel," Director Pim De la Parra illustrates a country with a diversity of communities, each imbued with its own particular customs, rituals, ethno-racial differences and prejudices. (Surinam/Netherlands, 1976, 111 min, Pim de la Parra, dir., Romance, Drama)
6pm BURNING AN ILLUSION The incinerated illusions are those of Pat Williams, an attractive young Black woman with a steady clerical job, a modest flat in West London, and the ultimate aspiration of settling down to a comfortable middle class married life. These dreams are torn asunder when Williams' boyfriend Del is subjected to an altercation with the police and is subsequently incarcerated. As Williams is educated on Black politics, what results is the gradual realization that her middle-class aspirations are simply those imposed upon by the white hegemony. Drawn into a reacquaintance with her African heritage and a political awakening, Williams begins to see society more sharply. (United Kingdom, 1981, 107 min, Menelik Shabazz, dir., Romance, Drama)
8pm IN SEARCH OF THE BLACK KNIGHT In Search of the Black Knight is a documentary that takes a humorous look at the complexities of African-American romantic relationships. In particular, the film addresses the perceived shortage of eligible black men to women and the theories on why this problem exists. The film follows director Tamarat Makonnen as he travels across the country in an attempt to find the truth behind this widely contested subject. Combining professional advice, street interviews and sketch comedy; this comical documentary depicts a familiar territory, but a necessary conversation nonetheless. (United States, 2013, 102 minutes, Tamarat Makonnen, dir., Documentary)
