Ben Adams - A Radiant Talent on Vibes
It's always a treat to find a exceptional new talent on the vibraphones, since high-quality vibes players are few and far between. Bay Area vibist Ben Adams is just such a sparkling musician, however, as the rave reviews for Old Thoughts for a New Day, his recently released third CD as a leader, easily attest.
"As the title of this colorful, multi-mood jazz date promises," writes Jonathan Widran of All Music Guide of the Adams' new CD, "the innovative vibist is entering a new realm in which he's the main composer but the glorious ghosts of his inspirations are clear for all to hear. The most fascinating aspect of the set is the many ways Adams uses his shimmering vibes -- as the bright lead melody over the darker tones of the title track, as a charged vehicle for improvisation, and as a gentle harmony element behind the scorching horns . . . .'
Be sure to catch Adams, a fierce, innovative talent, as he illuminates Pearl's leading a band of Bay Area "young lions, including trumpeter Erik Jekabson, saxophonist Mitch Marcus, bassist Fred Randolph and drummer Andre Sumelius, all trailblazing band leaders in their own right.
"The cool intelligence of his improvising shows why Adams is a class act who helps to extend the mainstream lineage of Red Norvo-Lionel Hampton-Milt Jackson-Bobby Hutcherson-Gary Burton (to name but five)." - David Lewis, Cadence Magazine
Ben Adams, originally from the Midwest, began his musical life as a drummer but soon switched to the vibraphone. In the mid-90s, he studied at the Berklee School of Music with Dave Samuels, Dave Friedman and Victor Mendoza. On first album, The Figured Wheel, Adams featured both standards and originals. On his second effort, Music For Six, he explored the work of modern classical composer Todd Brindley Herschberger. On his latest work, Old Thoughts for a New Day, Adams steps front and center to illuminate his own prowess as a composer of fascinating and moving material.
Backed by his band of Bay Area all-stars, Adams promises to scale breathtaking musical heights for a radiant night at Pearl's.
