Ben Henriques Trio: Bebop and Beyond
Featuring Jen Hodge on bass and Tristan Paxton on guitar
Originally a native of Vancouver, Ben Henriques made his way to Montreal in 2001 to study Jazz at McGill University where he earned his Bachelor's in Jazz Performance. Since then he has made a name for himself on the Montreal Jazz scene as a musician, bandleader, recording engineer and an educator. He has shared the stage with many Jazz greats including Joe Lovano, John Taylor, Phil Dwyer, Ben Monder, Jim McNeely, Tim Ries, Dave Liebman, Kevin Dean, Andre White and many more. His first record as a leader "The Responsibility Club (RBR2009)" rose to #1 on the airwaves in February 2009 and was also selected as #2 jazz album of 2009 by Radio Jazz Plus. Ben completed his Masters in Jazz Performance at McGill's Schulich School of Music in 2012 and released his second album, "Captain Awesome (ChronoJazz)" in October 2013. Ben is currently teaching Saxophone and Flute at Vancouver Island University and working as a freelance musician and teacher in Vancouver, BC.
Ben will be presenting some of his favourite music from the 1950's and beyond. He has been inspired by musicians such as Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Bud Powell. Jennifer Hodge is a versatile upright and electric bass player originally from Vancouver Island. She has become a regular on the Vancouver scene and is passionate about playing music in all styles from jazz to classical to rock to folk to musical theatre. She currently holds a regular slot every second Wednesday at Guilt & Co, a bar in Gastown, where she leads a traditional jazz band, Jen Hodge's All Stars. Tristan Paxton is a young guitarist who is creating a great reputation for himself since completing his musical studies at McGill University. He is involved in many different projects and is busy teaching and performing around Vancouver. Together the trio will offer a unique musical expression stemming from the rich tradition that is bebop music.
