In My Corner
Back by popular demand after a critically acclaimed East Bay run, and two sold-out weeks in San Francisco, Joe Orrach's solo show returns to Intersection for the Arts.
Actor, performer, dancer, singer, tap sensation and US Air Force welterweight boxing champion, Joe Orrach has performed worldwide on stage, television and in motion pictures with greats such as Gregory Hines, Woody Allen, Savion Glover, Honi Coles, and James Mangold. Joe started on the streets of NYC, at 72nd and Broadway, where Gregory Hines discovered him two decades ago. The Bay Area knows Joe Orrach as one of the "power acts" at Teatro Zinzanni where for six years he created characters like Gentleman Joe the Barbary Coast pugilistic hoofer, Tino the Puerto Rican parking attendant and Alister the bookworm who transforms himself into a world class boxer.
Joe delivers a coming of age story in rhythms of jazz, Latin, rock 'n roll and tap. Born into a family dominated by a line of Puerto Rican boxers and sweetened by Sicilian food, gesture and song, Joe presents a personal story in a high-powered evening of narrative, music and movement. In this dramatic solo performance, Joe is directed by internationally renowned comedian and Broadway star Michael Davis and accompanied by a jazz ensemble, led by musical director and world class pianist Matthew Clark. This poignant, funny show is as fast-moving and full of life as the performer who created it.
"Bay Area performer Joe Orrach's 'In My Corner' is a knockout" -Contra Costa Times
"In My Corner...would be merely a tour-de-force if it weren't so close to the bone... It's truly a show, continuous entertainment, its infectious spirit telegraphed by the rapture of the performer." -Berkeley Daily Planet
"Orrach is an electrifying performer" East Bay Express
