Powell Street Festival launch with GRMLN and Late Spring
Launch of the 38th annual Powell Street Festival on Friday night with a live performance from California-based band GRMLN and local band Late Spring. www.powellstreetfestival.com
GRMLN (USA), the noise pop project of Kyoto-born Yoodoo Park incorporates the sunny feel of his Southern Californian upbringing with nostalgia for Japan. Choosing the name GRMLN to highlight this feeling of disconnection, Park began writing and recording songs in 2010 in between surfing and attending the University of California Santa Cruz. GRMLN's melancholic guitar-pop songs of his early days have morphed into something more rock-driven representing a Californian blend of clean-rock and dream-pop. GRMLN's 2012 debut Explore (Carpark Records) was followed by a full-length album, Empire, in June 2013. He is currently working on his sophomore full-length album, Soon Away, to be released on September 16, 2014.

Late Spring is a rock and roll band from Vancouver formed in 2013. Their sound combines raw and dirty with melodic dream pop elements. The band members are all visual artists and formed after Casey (formerly of Kick Evrything), Nik, and Ryan graduated from art school and felt that something was missing from their practices, with Johan joining soon after on the drums. They are recording their first single this early autumn.
