Winner Seven Csars (French Oscars) Including Best Film, Best Actress & Best Screenplay
Based on a true story, Martin Provosts awesomely beautiful new film captures the unique artistry of Sraphine Louis (1862-1942), who was employed as a cleaning woman but found her true purpose painting gorgeous images of nature. The film swept the 2008 French Oscars, winning seven awards, including Best Picture, and a much-deserved Best Actress Award for Yolande Moreau. At age 13, Seraphine began a lifetime of work as a housekeeper. She was uneducated, and could barely read or write, but Sraphine began making art in the seclusion of her small room. Devoutly religious, her subject was the wonder of gods natural world, which she depicted with an ingenious mix of found materials, including vegetable dyes, candle wax, wine, cloth, and wood. Working feverishly through the night, her hidden art was intended only for her eyes, and those of god. Sraphine remained a hidden talent until her creative efforts was discovered by art critic Wilhelm Uhde, an early champion of Picasso. He saw her intuitive thread of genius and began gently encouraging her. Provosts mesmerizing film chronicles their friendship, and her growing appreciation of her own work for the first time. The Arts Establishment now labels her a Modern Primitive or Outsider Artist, their common appellation for those without formal training.
