Euripides Orestes
First produced in 408 BCE, Orestes is still very much a play for our time. It's a story of young people who have been misled and abandoned by those responsible for guiding and protecting them, their parents, their government, and their gods. It's a play about hurt. The youngsters, Orestes and his sister Electra are condemned for a crime they were instructed to commit - where will they turn but to more violence? The situation goes from bad to worse and just when it seems no one can possibly come out unscathed the God Apollo appears and, for the most improbable reasons, sets everything to rights.
