Tracy Kidder: 'Strength in What Remains'
Tracy Kidder is the author of Mountains Beyond Mountains, a nonfiction narrative of doctor-to-the-poor Paul Farmer, which was chosen as the UW's inaugural Common Book. That distinction means that since fall quarter 2006, all incoming freshmen and transfer students have had to read Mountains; it's required reading at schools across the country, too. Called a "master of the non-fiction narrative," Kidder won the Pulitzer Prize for his book The Soul of a New Machine, about the development of a minicomputer. His new book, Strength in What Remains, is the story of a Burundian genocide survivor who escapes to the United States during the war but returns to his native country to build a medical clinic. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with University Book Store.
