Students can enroll for the remaining 2 weeks or by a single class.
Our current class dates are: Wed, Jul 9 Wed, Jul 16
CLASS OUTLINE:
FIRST CLASSES: STARTING WITH THE FAMILIAR
Theater is about sharing stories, understanding them and performing them. Each class will begin with story time in Spanish of familiar titles, such as Huevos Verdes con Jamón (Green Eggs and Ham), Jorge el Curioso (Curious George), and Donde Viven Los Monstruos (Where The Wild Things Are). In this way, kids begin with the familiar and experience it in a new way through the Spanish language. Each week will also feature basic theater exercises and fun physical warm ups. We use the stories as the basis for the exercises and warm ups. Kids pick their favorite moments in the stories and we perform those scenes, characters and elements.
SHOWTIME: The last fifteen minutes of each week features a show the kids create demonstrating the skills they've learned that day.
THEATER SKILLS COVERED: Improvisation, listening skills, ensemble building, physical warm-ups, and building confidence through performance.
NEXT: MASK MAKING
In Weeks 2 and 3, we add mask making to further the kids with character development. The kids also compose their own stories using the characters and words they've learned in Spanish up to this point. The stories will consist of a simple beginning, middle and end.
We will write and create short performances using the mask characters that the kids have made.
SHOWTIME: We will perform ALL the stories authored by the kids featuring their masks! THEATER SKILLS COVERED: Story structure and composition, character development, individual performance, mask making and mask performance.
FINAL WEEK: ¡EL GRAN ESPECTÁCULO!
Now that the kids have gained experience with small individual plays, we will progress to a more ambitious collaborative BIG SHOW! In Weeks 4 6, the kids will work together to create a longer play using Spanish vocabulary.
COSTUME MAKING: The kids will make costumes in class for the BIG SHOW!
THE BIG SHOW: We put everything together using the stories, masks, costumes, and our writing skills to perform ¡EL GRAN ESPECTÁCULO!
THEATER SKILLS COVERED: Writing stories together, being a scene partner for one another, making your own costume, and performing as a group!
