ROAD, a play by Jim Cartwright
1987. England is reeling from a recession. But for the inhabitants of a Lancashire street, there's a party to go to. Join the vagrant Scullery on a tour, from sitting rooms to bedrooms, from disco to pub, to witness a nocturnal slice of life in the lowest depths of the Thatcher era, ''where things slide to but don't drop off.''
Written in 1986 against the political background of Thatcherism, Road explores social exclusion and the bleakness of a working class existence with biting, roguish humor. An ensemble cast of 12 rotate the 25 roles of the townspeople, with one character, Scullery, serving as the audiences drunken, foul-mouthed, but charming guide.
