LIZZO, SF based Funk, Soul and Blues band along with SUSTO, featuring Justin Osborne,
Lizzo is a San Francisco based quintet specializing in upbeat, groove-heavy funk, soul and blues.
The group drives its deep-pocket, stripped-down grooves with punchy brass and intricate guitar phrases, while locking it in with funk and soul rhythms. The result is a combination of polished, tight, original arrangements accentuated by improvised solos and frequent guest vocals from Bay Area vocalists and MCs. The influence of artists such as Maceo Parker, Trombone Shorty, Tower of Power, Jimi Hendrix, Jamiroquai, Soulive and Budos Band can all be heard in the groups polished original sound. As individuals, the members of Lizzo boast musical resumes comprised of hundreds of gigs and decades of experience. As a whole, the band is truly a sum of all parts that first came together in early 2013. The danceable funk and soul fusion comes from the rhythm section of Alex Emslie (bass) and David Burrows (drums, percussion), and the melodies of Bryan Weinberg (guitar), Gary Moskowitz (trumpet and fluegelhorn) and Christian Von Bogdandy (alto and baritone sax,
SUSTO, features Justin Osborne, an alt-country solo artist from South Carolina touring in support of his brand new full-length release, SUSTO. He will be performing songs from this new release as well as from Justin's solo albums Blue Yonder & Vampires In Havana.
According to the Free Times.com review of SUSTO, it: "takes a darker, rootsier direction... The word "Susto," according to the band's own bio, is a term describing a "folk illness" apt nomenclature for the kind of moss-drenched Americana in which the band wraps its songs.
SUSTO establishes its Southern gothic stance right away, dropping in snippets of various old-time hymn lyrics.
Like Flannery O'Connor, they're not afraid to expose unpleasant truths. "Motorcycle Club" is a crisp and bitter hallucinatory diatribe that's part Steve Earle, part Neil Young & Crazy Horse. (It) closes with a gorgeous instrumental coda worthy of Blue Rodeo or Chris Isaak; it doesn't really end, it just fades gently into the distance as the performance continues, suggesting more to come from this promising new project."
