Blues for Charles
Unbelievable! We start in Alabama in 1911 and end in San Francisco in 2014. This hero's journey is plenty complex and hecka funny. Nothing I can say will do justice to the moment we venture together beyond the Vail. Come with me as we pick up the pieces of a living man and tell a joyful story. Jim Crow is alive in well in San Francisco... Be prepared to sing the Blues for Charles...
This solo piece was worked shopped over a three year period 2010 to 2013 at solo performance classes at the Marsh San Francisco and Berkeley. "Rich'd" is me Harry Richard Hall (Hru) you can check me out every Sunday Night from 9 pm to 12 Midnight on my show Jazz Sessions 91.1 FM KCSM. I'm a crew of one.
The Fillmore Auditorium and the Fillmore District has a historical narrative from the 1940's, 50's and 60's shrouded in mystery. This is primarily because of the August 2nd 1966 murder of Charles Sullivan the original owner of the Fillmore Auditorium a prominent promoter of black music on the west coast.
