Polar Vortex: Upon Return

From May 11-June 23, choreographer Jody Sperling is on a voyage to the Arctic circle as research for her project "Ice Melt." She is accompanying a scientific expedition aboard the US Coast Guard Icebreaker Healy that is studying the relationship between the thinning ice sheet and increased phytoplankton blooms.

As the first-ever "choreographer-in-residence" aboard the Healy, Sperling is making dance forays onto the sea ice and is exploring ways to express sea ice's dynamism and fragility for a stage work upon her return. In this lecture-demonstration, Sperling will share her experience of the expedition. She will also show video of her sea ice dancing and photographs taken during the adventure. Weather permitting, the event will include an al fresco solo performance on the JCC's Conference Center terrace.

The evening will conclude with a discussion about climate science and education. Sperling will be joined by guest speaker Dr. Stephanie Pfirman, Hirschorn Professor and co-Chair of Barnard's Environmental Science Department, faculty member of Columbia's Earth Institute and Primary Investigator for PoLARHub, an interdisciplinary team comprised of experts in climate science, learning theory, and formal and informal education.
