New Fangled Opera
New Fangled Opera's summer festival of operas offers a little bit for everyone: traditional favorites, edgy new works, and a world premiere. The New Fangled Festival of Opera will be held at the Marigny Opera House June 5, 6, 7, and 8, at 8:00pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by contacting the Marigny Opera House.
New Fangled Opera will present the world premiere of Transition 1 from Anthony Green's Alex in Transition, based on the life of a fictional transgender woman named Alex. After being rejected by a potential love interest in a rather emotionally dramatic manner, Alex continues her discussion about this situation with her therapist, Psyche. Two other modern operas will also be presented: Bekah Simms' The Box Office, a quirky look at the interactions between a snarky box office attendant and a clueless customer, and David Wolfson's Rapture, the story about what happens between a mother and daughter while awaiting the predicted time of the Rapture. Rounding out the evening is a traditional favorite, Mozart's The Impresario, a comedic glimpse into the inner workings of an opera company.
This year's cast is full of singers from New Orleans, New York, Houston, Kansas City and Los Angeles. All hailing from New Orleans are Melanie Gardner, Kevin Rouchel, Laura Booras, and Veronica Sharkey. Adding to our local cast is Natalie Eccleston from New York, Maxwell Porterfield from Houston, and Melinda Ehrlich from Los Angeles. Directing these performances are Kathleen Stakenas from New York and David Toro from Austin. Co-founders Chris and Shelley Burton reprise their roles as conductor and singer respectively.
