Discovering the Story of the Land: A Time Traveler's Toolkit
What did Pepperwoods landscape look like 100 years ago...500 years ago...20,000 years ago? Arthur Dawson, historical ecologist at the Sonoma Ecology Center, and Rand Evett, UC Berkeley paleoecologist, will introduce you to basic techniques of historical ecology and soil microfossil analysis, followed by a hiking tour of the Preserve that will draw upon the latest ongoing research to answer questions about landscape change. Arthur and Rand have recently completed an historical and phytolith study of the grasslands of Pepperwood. Class meets at the Bechtel House. Date: October 10, 2009, 9:00am to 3:00pm
