Unheard Voices: Putting your story on stage
Not seeing enough diverse theatre? Roles? Well then why not create your own work?! This workshop with The Royal Mexican Players will explore tools to find and express your voice on stage. Using various applied theatre and writing techniques, you will take the first steps to creating an original work.
June 23rd, 2014 from 7-10pm $15 per student
Please arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the start of this workshop and enjoy free coffee and churro's!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Alvaro Saar Rios is a writer & a performer. He holds an MFA in Writing for the Stage & Screen from Northwestern University and is the co-founder of The Royal Mexican Players. Mr. Rios is the author of various plays, such as The Crazy Mexican Show, One Hot Texican Summer, and A Trip Through the Mind of a 'Crazy' Mexican. His work has been performed in New York City, Hawaii, California, Chicago, Milwaukee, and all over Texas! At Northwestern, Mr. Rios co-wrote a TV pilot (Prison Boat) that received a Student Production Nomination from the Television Academy, the producers of the Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards. Mr. Rios teaches at UW-Milwaukee and has commissions from The Alley Theatre(TX), First Stage Children's Theatre(WI), and The Milwaukee Zoological Society. His current project is a young audience play about lucha libre!
Michelle Lopez-Rios has performed in The Crazy Mexican Show and Welcome to Milwaukee/Bienvenidos a Milwaukee and directed One Hot Texican Summer, Nuestra Voz, Nuestra Historia and A Trip Through the Mind of a 'Crazy' Mexican for the Royal Mexican Players. She is a professional voice coach, actor, and director. Coaching credits include: Goodman Theatre, Houston Shakespeare Festival, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Bad Soviet Habits, Stages Repertory Theatre, Jersey Productions, Unhinged Productions, Unity Theatre, UW-Milwaukee, U. of Houston, and Rice University. She has performed at Mark Taper Forum, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, A Contemporary Theatre, Court Theatre, Troy Rep, and Ojai Shakespeare Festival. Other directing credits include Decaffeinated Tragedy (2009 Prague Fringe Festival); Terms and Conditions; By the Bog of Cats, Arms and the Man, Ring Round the Moon and Verseworks. Michelle is an Assistant Professor at UW-Milwaukee, an associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, a featured coach on www.accenthelp.com, and a proud Royal Mexican Mama.
