In her tower
Daria Kaufman presents "In her tower," an evening of dance theater exploring psycho-physical boundaries and female persona, at the Joe Goode Annex, June 27-28, 2014. This show marks Kaufman's last presentation in the Bay Area before moving to Europe in the Fall to continue her dance career.
"In her tower" features two premieres: an ensemble piece of the same name, and a solo performed by Kaufman titled "Restless Myth." In the works, Kaufman deconstructs the feminine with a mixture of raw and nuanced movement, wit and subversion. Against Cathy Berberian's operatic, extended vocals, "In her tower" evokes calmness and unease, glamour and hysteria. Relationships intertwine amidst an atmosphere of tension and pregnant voids. "Restless Myth" - set to a brassy, jarring, polyphonic score by local composer Ken Ueno - pushes the limits of musicality and confronts dance tropes with equal parts irony and sincerity. Kaufman will also perform audience favorite, "Product," a witty take on women in marketing, which premiered in 2013 to great acclaim. The show features performers Bianca Brzezinski, Rebecca Chun, Aura Fischbeck, and Karla Quintero, with lighting design by Dave Robertson.
" 'Product' is Daria Kaufman's elegantly crafted pitch for the dirty truths about women and the marketplace. Its dry and brainy humor is a howl." - Ann Murphy, dance critic, Bay Area News Group.
Daria Kaufman is a fiscally sponsored project of Dancers' Group. This work is supported by Shawl-Anderson Dance Center.
