Calf Island Expedition
THERE WILL BE NO TRIP TO GREAT BREWSTER ON SEPTEMBER 20. The trip is to Calf Island only.
Author Laura Thibodeau Jones whose family lived among the outer islands will be on the trip. Her book is "Generations: 1891-1940 Living on the Islands of Boston Harbor." She will have copies of her book available to purchase on the trip.
Today a brick chimney is the sole reminder of an early 20th century estate, "The Moorings," that was on this outer harbor island. In 1789 the Massachusetts Humane Society built one of its first refuge huts on the southwest shore. Calf Island has rocky beach and grass covered pathways, steep rocky paths featuring some un-stable stones occasionally.
Bring your own food and drink and carry off all trash. The trip goes rain or shine with no refunds. Trip canceled ONLY by captain's orders. We travel on a beach landing vessel. Bring an extra pair of shoes is you like; in case your feet get wet as you disembark the boat.
