The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) Directed by Joseph Sargent
"Sometimes you have to go backward to go forward" - MTA ad
Step on board the pre-gentrified, pre-Giulianied NYC subway system and you never know what might happen. Not only does this adaptation of the John Godey best-seller about a subway hijacking serve as a time capsule of a New York that once was, but also of a cinema that predates and anticipates the adrenaline-pumping action movie genre, from Die Hard to Toy Soldiers to Speed to The Fast & the Furious to this year's own Pelham remake. This 1974 original is a veritable who's-who of New York-based character actors including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Hector Elizando, Martin Balsam and Jerry Stiller. Stand clear of the closing doors, bitches!
