Coherence
Even if she weren't anxious about the comet streaking across the sky, Em would not be having a good night. Her phone just shattered in her hand, and she's learned that a friend with questionable judgment is bringing his new girlfriend to dinner, a woman who used to date Em's current boyfriend. The first glasses of wine have barely been poured when tensions start to rise. None of that matters, however, when the lights go off throughout the neighborhood, all except for one house a few blocks over, lit up like a beacon in the darkness. Armed only with Halloween glow sticks and half-baked theories, Em and her friends wander out into the night, hoping to puzzle out exactly what is going on. Few films could successfully bring together The Twilight Zone, Schrödinger's cat, Gwyneth Paltrow, and horse tranquilizers, but Coherence does all that and more. Writer/director James Ward Byrkit goes full Escher for his brilliantly complex debut feature, a tantalizing, twisting tale of friendships strained past the point of coherence and recognition.
