The Spirit of the Impossible-Strange: The PJCE Celebrates Sun Ra
PORTLAND, OR:  On May 23, 2014, the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE) will celebrate the life and works of jazz trailblazer Sun Ra through original pieces composed by its members. This will take place at Tabor Space located at 5441 SE Belmont. The evening begins at 6:30 with a "meet the composers" session where PJCE composers talk about their pieces and answer audience questions. A silent auction will run for the evening, and appetizers will be available. Music begins at 7:30.

Among the composers/performers are Charley Gray, Director of the Jazz Department at Portland State University; Galen Clark, pianist for one of Portland's most popular jazz bands, Trio Subtonic, and the much-in-demand George Colligan, who has worked with the likes of Phil Woods and Cassandra Wilson. Each composition is inspired by Sun Ra's turning usual musical structures on their heads and looking towards a divergent vision of society. In keeping with the spirit of Sun Ra's life works and music, this is a community-sponsored event, put on by a grassroots organization.

Admission is "Pay after Play", in which a free-will donation will be collected after the performance rather than before. This is an all-ages, family-friendly show. We are asking listeners bring cash, but we can also accept credit or debit cards.

ABOUT THE PJCE: Portland Jazz Composers' Ensemble is a 12-piece ensemble that commissions and performs original works by its members and jazz artists in Portland and beyond. Brett Campbell said the PJCE is "...one of the city's most valuable new music institutions" It is our mission to seek out and perform original works and to enrich the community's awareness of contemporary music. We also operate a record label, PJCE Records, which release one jazz album per month. We are in our sixth year of operation.
