Second Sunday Series -Aires- Fabiana Katz and Stephen Smith
The Roedde House Second Sunday Concert series presents a Latin themed program featuring the "dark, lustrous voice" of mezzo-soprano Fabiana Katz and multi-talented Dr. Stephen Smith on piano. Immersed in music in her native Argentina, Fabiana shows her roots via repertoire which highlights her varied cultural background. This duo has performed together all over the lower Mainland, and they are truly not to be missed!
Fabiana Katz, mezzo-soprano
Immersed in music in her native Argentina, Fabiana Katz moved to Canada at the age of 14. She earned a B.Mus. in Music at the University of Calgary and a Masters of Music in choral conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Critics have used words like "chocolate" and "caramel" to describe the richness and shimmering quality of Fabiana's voice; she has also acquired a range and an edgy dramatic vocal timbre that make her performances both intimate and powerful.
Ms Katz has appeared as a soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Radio Orchestra, and the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra. Next December 2014 she will be guest soloist in Handel's Messiah with the Regina Symphony Orchestra.
Ms Katz is a member of the Vancouver Chamber Choir, under the direction of Jon Washburn, a founding member of the a-cappella trio Kallisto, and a member of the early music ensemble Stellaria. She has been guest soloist with the Erato Ensemble, the early music orchestra A company of Strings, the Monteverdi Symposium, and Opera di Concertisti. As a recitalist, Ms. Katz focuses on repertoire which highlights her varied cultural background: Spanish, Latin American and Sephardic. Her recent opera experience include the title role in Handel's Amadigi di Gaula with Opera Appassionata, and Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.
Stephen Smith, pianist
Stephen Smith grew up in rural Nova Scotia, where he sang and played the piano from an early age. After initial studies in his home province in both piano and organ, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and while there he participated in national and international competitions, winning numerous awards and distinctions. Since 1990, Stephen has lived in Vancouver, obtaining his doctoral degree in piano performance from UBC and contributing to the musical life of the city as a soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, teacher, conductor, and composer.
