Quartermaine's Terms
Quartermaine's Terms is the work of prizewinning playwright Simon Gray, author of the equally celebrated Butley and Otherwise Engaged. Never has this writer been more amusing and touching than in this thoroughly engaging portrait of a mediocre but lovable English teacher named St. John Quartermaine and his fellow faculty at a small school in Cambridge that teaches English to foreigners.
The script is an artful portrait of doom and gloom blended with bristling wit and dry, even uproarious comedy. The mixture is so artfully balanced that we really don't know where the laughter ends and the tears begin. The playwright is in full possession of that Chekhovian territory where tragedy and absurdity become one and the same. The brave little lives that Mr. Gray so compassionately illuminates could be lived by any of us, and that's why they arouse emotions that are anything but small.
Directed by David Dubin the cast includes: Frank Tangredi, Liz DeFazio Rodriguez, Trevor Firetog, Ralph Carideo, David Dubin, and Staci Rosenberg-Simons.
