Haku Inoa: To Weave A Name
Haku Inoa: To Weave A Name
Filmmaker Christen Marquezâs Hawaiian name is, Hepua koa manaâa o ke kapu ka malie â o â no naliâi e me ka hanohano âia, but donât ask her what it means, because she doesnât know yet. She is working on it by making an hour-long documentary for PBS called Haku Inoa: To Weave A Name. Almost three years ago, Christen began taking hula classes. This was the first step in her journey towards understanding her Hawaiian name. âMy mother is a kumu hula, or master hula teacher. So, she was able to give my brothers and I these incredibly beautiful and meaningful Hawaiian names. Unfortunately, she has a mental illness called schizophrenia. She was unable to care for us, so we had to leave the islands with my father for Seattle when I was eight years old, and I never had the chance to learn about my name from her.â
Christen Marquez, a young Native Hawaiian of mixed heritage and emerging documentary filmmaker will begin the evening with a short hula program accompanied by Pekelo. She will also screen a previous short shown at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival's Gen-Y studio, animations, and selected scenes from her work in progress Haku Inoa. Join us for ths his evening of films, hula, Hawaiian music and culture presented in partnership with The Wing Luke Museum, The MAVIN Foundation, and Reel Grrls. Your support during this fundraising event will go to the completion of Haku Inoa and perpetuating independent voices and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) culture in the media. Mahalo nui! Thanks very much! July 15th, 2009 6pm - 9pm Music, Screening, and Fundraising Event. Tickets: $10.00
