2005 THEATRE SEASON
WAITING FOR LEFTY By Clifford Odets (Jan. 20--Feb. 12) (Directed by Sheila Daniels) Beginning and ending in a meeting hall, Waiting for Lefty conveys the gradual movement towards a strike for a group of taxi drivers in 1930's America. Composed of love scenes, fights and rabble-rousers, the story ends with a resounding chorus to "STRIKE!" a moment of challenge for blue-collar America to rise past individual fears, band together, place faith in mass demonstration, and live for oneself.
DEATH OF A SALESMAN By Arthur Miller (March 30--April 23) (Directed by Aimee Bruneau) On its New York premiere in 1949, Death of a Salesman was hailed as the first great play to lay bare the emptiness of America's relentless drive for material success. Willy Loman has spent his life following the American way, living out his belief in salesmanship as a way to reinvent himself. But somehow the riches and respect he covets have eluded him. At age 63, he searches for the moment his life took a wrong turn, the moment of betrayal that undermined his relationship with his wife and destroyed his relationship with Biff, the son in whom he invested his faith.
ARCHANGELS DON'T PLAY PINBALL by Dario Fo (July 7--30) (Directed by Matthew Kwatinetz) A radical comedy by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo, Archangels Donï3â??4?t Play Pinball tells the story of Lanky, a petty criminal living on his wits who tries to go straight and struggles hysterically to work within a system of hookers, bureaucrats, and con men in the Milanese underworld. Through a series of misadventures, including a brief stay in a dog kennel because of a paper-work confusion, the play spins to a manic and unexpected finale about the "madness of man, [and] the madness of bureaucracy." Lanky's story unfolds in one of Fo's most accomplished farces and, typical of Fo, it will have you howling for more!
