Sweater Funk is bringing another underground soul legend to the Elbo Room stage in May! Having thrown some crazy successful parties with Slave's Steve Arrington & The King of Boogie Leroy Burgess, we're out of our minds excited to host a live P.A. from The Prophet of Soul, Howard Johnson! Howard Johnson's music has been a staple of the boogie and Sweater Funk sound since day one! We've been rinsing his classic boogie floor fillers like "Much Too Much", "So Fine", "Keeping Love New", Older Girl" and Niteflyte's classic stepper "If You Want It"! Howard's been doing the soul circuit in the USA and Europe lately, enjoying the worldwide boogie revival and his voice has never been better! Come dance to Howard Johnson's boogie classics with the only crew in San Francisco who knows how to boogie all night long, from the chart toppers to the deepest cuts, Howard and the Sweater Funk crew will be dropping straight boogie heat all night long!
Starting his career in Miami bars and clubs, Howard Johnson would soon meet guitarist Sandy Torano in 1977 and join up as lead singer of the group Niteflyte. After securing a deal with Arista Records, Niteflyte would enjoy a few successful pop hits off of the mere 2 albums they released but generated enough buzz for A&M Records to sign Howard as a solo artist. Howard released some of the most legendary boogie LPs and singles of all time with A&M in 1982. It was a short but potent run yielding three essential albums KEEPING LOVE NEW (produced by Kashif, Paul Lawrence Jones & Morris Brown), DOIN IT MY WAY (produced by The System) and THE VISION (production help from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis). KEEPING LOVE NEW also delivered a hit single for Howard with "So Fine", topping out at number 6 on the Billboard R&B charts and NUMBER 1 on the Bilboard Dance charts! Soul heads have been seeking out his albums for years in search of his dependably funky rhythms and soulful vocals that could go from soaring to heart wrenching inside of a chorus! Still thriving in the 90's Howard was guest featured on vocals and co-produced music for such artists as Madonna, Barry White, Boys II Men & Tupac Shakur. Currently Howard is performing and wowing fans around the world as a solo artist. When Howard isn't in the studio or performing and touring the globe, he is working as an independent producer, musical director, mentor and vocal therapist for several top R&B artists and helping new talent find their voice and way in the music business.
Sweater Funk San Francisco's Sweater Funk DJ crew have been the city's most dedicated purveyors of the funky subgenre known as BOOGIE for 5+ years now. Their vision to bring boogie, strictly on vinyl originals, to the masses has earned them a diehard following who pack The Knockout every Sunday. They've won SF Weekly's Best new club 2009, hosted Djs such as Dam-Funk, Daz-I-Kue, DJ Spinna, Mayer Hawthorne, Peanut Butter Wolf, Kon & Amir, Onra, Benedek, Myron & E, Monk One & Cool Chris plus they brought the king of boogie himself, Leroy Burgess, to San Francisco for a one of a kind night of boogie madness!
