Sestri & the Vespertine Tribal Dance Troupe
Great River Arts is thrilled to announce the upcoming collaborative performance of Sestri and the Vespertine Tribal Dance Troupe Thursday, May 22nd. Tickets are available for $10 online at www.greatart.org or at Great River Arts in Little Falls. Doors open for the show at 7:30 pm and the performance begins at 8 pm. This will be the first time the groups perform together, bringing the music and traditions of Eastern Europe to life in downtown Little Falls for an exquisite evening of entertainment.
Now celebrating their fourth year, Sestri ("Sisters" in Bulgarian) is one of the newest performance groups in the Little Falls area. Through the dissonant harmonies, unusual rhythms and distinctive vocal qualities of Slavic and Eastern European music, Sestri celebrates one of the world's richest musical traditions. Sestri performs a wide variety of eastern European music- Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, and Croatian- as well as music from some of the former Soviet republics- Georgia, the Ukraine and Latvia. "We are very excited to share the stage with the women of Vespertine Tribal," says musical director, Celo V'ec. "Our songs and their dancing share a deep kinship both geographically and culturally and we all strive to preserve the authenticity of the original art forms."
From the Elemental Studio, located in the Crossing Arts Center in Brainerd, the women of Vespertine Tribal bring the ancient mystery and beauty of belly dance to the stage. Always breathtaking, magical, and awe-inspiring, Vespertine Tribal are professional dancers that put the utmost care into crafting every show. "These dances come from ancient cultures where women often did not have a means of self-expression", explains Jessica Bleichner, a teacher and performer with Tribal Fusion. " They would gather and dance, not for men, but for themselves. Today, these genres have come to the United States and taken on new styles. Ours is a very personal interpretation, demonstrated through our costumes and movements, as well as having the cultural roots." Join the Vespertine dancers before the performance for a belly dancing and movement class from 7-7:30 for an additional $5.
