Piedmont Pickin' hosted by Kinney Rorrer and feat. Doug Rorrer & Friends & The Jus Cauz Bluegrass Band at The Blue Ridge Music Center
Saturday, July 12th's concert - from 7-9 PM - is entitled Piedmont Pickin' and features high energy North Carolina Old Time Mountain Music from Doug Rorrer and Friends and Virginia Style Bluegrass from The Jus Cauz Bluegrass Band.
Kinney Rorrer is a old time mountain musician (The New North Carolina Ramblers). Kinney is the author of a biography of Charlie Poole called Ramblin' Blues: The Life and Songs of Charlie Poole. Poole was a recording artist for Columbia Records in the 1920s and 30s. Kinney's father was a native of Franklin County, Virginia and introduced him to old-time traditional music as a child. Kinney has a strong and abiding interest in the culture and the music it produced. He, along with Seth Williamson, are the co-hosts of a weekly radio show devoted to bluegrass and old-time music of the region. The show is entitled Back to the Blue Ridge and can be heard on WVTF FM (89.1) from Roanoke, Virginia.Kinney has performed and conducted workshops on old-time music at the Alaska Folk Festival, Berea Kentucky Folk Festival, Ferrum College Folklife Festival, the University of Chicago Folk Festival, and the Port Townsend Washington Fiddle Fest. Kinney has also written numerous articles and liner notes regarding old-time music for various publications and record companies. He has written entries for the Oxford University Press publication, The Encyclopedia of Country Music.
Doug Rorrer is from Eden, NC, north of Greensboro toward the Virginia line. Charlie Poole country. Doug is Poole's great nephew and Poole's fiddler Posey Rorrer's great nephew, too. Doug was involved in putting together the annual Charlie Poole Festival at Eden. Doug has a recording studio in his house and a label, Flyin' Cloud, for acoustic traditional music of the NW North Carolina region, largely, though not entirely. It's a good label with quite a catalog of some good music from the region between the mountains and Eden, and beyond.
Jus Cauz is a Southern Virginia based Bluegrass Band that recently won Best Bluegrass Band titled at the RenoFest Bluegrass Festival championship in Hartsville, SC. The festival is held in honor of legendary bluegrass banjo player Don Reno and attracts bluegrass bands and musicians from around the country. Jus Cauz was the first Virginia based bluegrass band to win the South Carolina contest. Jus Cauz was also named Best Bluegrass Band at the 2012 Virginia Folk Music Association competition. The band is comprised of a number of young, up and coming pickers plus well know fiddler) Tim Martin (Shenandoah Valley Boys). Tim has won numerous awards, including: 2007 First Place and Best Performance at Fries, Virginia Bluegrass Fiddle Competition; First Place Bluegrass Fiddle at the Galax Fiddlers Convention, 2008; and the Virginia Folk Music Association (VFMA) Bluegrass Fiddle Championship, 2011.
