Earthships and Permaculture: Applied Techniques for Modern Homesteading
Join us for an action-filled weekend on June 14-15, 2014 in the beautiful farming community of Darfield, BC and be part of a hands-on advanced workshop to implement the first part of The Darfield Earthship's permaculture design, located just north of Kamloops, BC.
The weekend features several workshops in one fun-filled gathering and includes:
Sepp Holzer-style high beds (one of the first installations in Canada) Creation of a hugelkulture bed in keeping with Sepp Holzer's original technique for cold climates Compost Tea Brewing as a technique to build soil and reduce compaction Forest gardening mimic the forest's natural abundance and capitalize on it through careful planning and management Moving from labour-heavy annual production to perennial gardening and landscaping Cold Climate permaculture (this is a 5a/5b climate zone) increase yield in a shorter growing season Building and prepping raised vegetable beds for a zone one area
These workshops are approximately $100 each if taken in isolation. Join us to learn how each are integrated into the first stage of The Darfield Earthship's multi-zone permaculture design.
People who will be interested in this workshop: Anyone who is taking, or has taken, a PDC course (join us to install an entire permaculture zone in two days!) Earthship enthusiasts who are excited to see how vegetative ecological systems integrate into alternative building styles Anyone entering small scale farming who is looking for innovative tools to get started Urbanites dreaming of moving to the country and living off the land Permies who want to move from the higher energy annual growing methods to perennial techniques Anyone wanting to take part in reclaiming industrial land for agriculture.
Mix with 19 other like-minded people to share hopes, ideas, successes and failures in your own permaculture journey.
Join your hosts, Sandra Burkholder and Chris Newton, of The Darfield Earthship the first fully permitted earthship in BC -- and permaculture experts, Javan Bernakevitch (Permaculture BC) and Gord Hiebert (Element Eco-Design) for informal and animated evening discussions about permaculture, earthship building, tiny homes, livestock as part of permaculture design, veggie oil vehicle conversions, greywater and rocket mass heater methods.
