The Johnny Nocturne Band, a finely-honed, 9-piece jump blues and swing group led by wailing tenor sax man John Firmin, propels audiences into the swirling cauldron of some seriously ferocious swing. They've been charging that beat since the 80s, when they were front and center at the vanguard of the whirlwind vintage swing revival.
Nothing's changed. The Johnny Nocturne Band is still a front runner in the crowd-pleasing world of hard-charging, high-wailing contemporary jump swing music. Full of mischief but serious musicians all, the Johnny Nocturne Band plays sophisticated roots music, perpetuating a still-beloved sound that has been all too often lost in the shuffle of "progress."
Few jump-swing bands have come close to measuring up to the standard of The Johnny Nocturne Band. The band's reputation was cemented with the release of highly acclaimed albums in the early 90s, Wailin' Daddy (1992) and Shake 'Em Up (1994). Their third album, Wild & Cool (1998), was on the jazz charts for over ten weeks and was awarded the prestigious Pres de Deutschen Schallparten Kritik award (the German Critics Award).
Wailin' & honkin' and harkening back to the 40s & 50s jump blues & swing era, the Johnny Nocturne band is equally adept at raw rock & roll, moody film noir-ish instrumentals and hopping bop. The Johnny Nocturne Band is comprised of some of the best musicians on the scene today and is acclaimed as one of the hottest live acts around. At all ends of the spectrum, the Johnny Nocturne Band is high-energy fun.
John Firmin was surrounded by jazz music from an early age while growing up the son of a tenor player in Anchorage, Alaska. Firmin was inspired by the R&B and jazz sounds of saxmen Ornette Cobb, Illinois Jacquet and Ben Webster.
In 1975 Firmin moved to San Franisco to join the legendary David Bromberg band. Eventually Firmin's desire to lead his own band, led him to create a band that skillfully spans the juncture between jazz and R&B: the Johnny Nocturne Band.
The Johnny Nocturne Band has received much critical and public acclaim while performing at festivals throughout Europe and North America.
