Kenny Robinson Headlines COMEDY CAT-ACULAR
Etobicoke comics to host show
for cat rescues
after their lost pet is returned home

After a Toronto Cat Rescue volunteer found their lost cat, husband-and-wife stand-up comedians Blair Streeter and Marianne Gibson are hosting a comedy show in Mimico to benefit local cat rescue charities.

In May 2010 the comedic couple's 12 year-old-cat Wilbur, a distinctive breed called a Cornish Rex escaped from their home in Etobicoke. "I went out to move the car just as Blair returned from a show, somehow he managed to slip past both of us." explains Marianne, the 44-year-old mother of two children Ocean, aged six and Benny, aged eight. "He'd never been out of the house for more than a few minutes before."

"I was in denial, every time I opened a drawer or cupboard I expected to find him sleeping there." says Blair, a 42-year-old, work-from-home father. For two stressful weeks Blair did little else other than search for the beloved family pet. "I put up 300 posters all over Etobicoke and even into Mississauga. I never thought he'd get any farther away than that."

The family had nearly given up on finding Wilbur when Blair received a call from a former co-worker who was aware of the missing feline because of Blair's facebook updates. She had read a blog by Beth Turner, of the Toronto Cat Rescue; Beth's blog described finding a home for a tabby Cornish Rex who was brought in to the Hamilton Humane Society a few days before. Blair couldn't believe it was possible, "I went into reverse denial, I told her that I didn't see how it could be our cat but I'd appreciate her looking into it. I said that even if it wasn't Wilbur we'd adopt him if we could."

Blair and the children drove to Markham immediately after school the next day to identify and hopefully retrieve their cat, "I couldn't tell if it was him right away, he had lost a lot of weight. He was 6.5 pounds when he left and 4.2 when he was found." Blair was able to identify Wilbur by a black spot on his left paw, "He looked at me as if to say 'oh great, you again'. He could barely lift his head, he was exhausted. When I asked what we owed for his vet bills I was told that the cat rescue doesn't charge for that, they'd even microchipped him. To say we were grateful would be a huge understatement."

"Wilbur recovered from the ordeal, we were giving him too many treats for a while and he gained all his weight back plus a pound or two." says Marianne. "He's 16 now and has kidney disease but he's probably no grumpier than other cats his age."

As for how the cat made the 65 kilometer journey the family speculates he crawled into the engine compartment of a neighbour's car, "We'll never know for sure." says Blair, "I've asked him how he did it a few times and he keeps giving me different stories."

On Friday May 30th Blair and Marianne will co-host CATACULR at Comedy Cove Etobicoke's newest comedy venue at Maple Leaf House Grill & Lounge, 2749 Lakeshore Blvd. West. Stand-up comedy legend Kenny Robinson (Comedy Now, After Hours) headlines the benefit for Toronto Cat Rescue and Forever Home Cat Rescue. Other acts will include Bobby Knauff, Pat MacDonald plus Ian Fergus' Catacular Cats. Tickets are $15 online at brownpapertickets.com, $20 at the door if available.
