Dave Scott Quartet - Burning Modern Jazz
The exciting, hard-swinging Dave Scott Quartet is taking a page out of modern jazz history, harkening back to the days when all-star musicians from the great big bands would form up into smaller groups led by stars like Johnny Hodges and Sweets Edison to show off their skills as bebop masters.
Led by lyrical, soaring trumpeter Dave Scott, the Dave Scott Quartet offers a foursome of the Bay Area's most compelling jazz musicians, players who, among their many talents, are vital members of San Francisco big bands including the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra and Pearl's own Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. Those players are Scott, pianist Adam Schulman, bassist Marcus Shelby and drummer Jeff Mars.
In this classic quartet setting, these four locals stars step out to reaffirm their status as vibrant modern jazz luminaries. During an electric Thursday night show at Pearl's, the Dave Scott Quartet will be celebrating the release of their new CD, Why Must It Be, joined by special guest Kim Nalley.
Counting leader Dave Scott on trumpet, the Dave Scott Quartet features four bona fide stars on the San Francisco modern jazz scene.
Dave Scott is a member of the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, a frequent contributor to the Marcus Shelby Orchestra trumpet section and a founding member of the extremely popular Brass Monkey Brass Band. His power and virtuosity as a horn man are such that he's been tabbed to tour with the Glen Miller Orchestra and with Rosemary Clooney. In fact, Scott is currently a member of the touring band of well-known perfectionist Boz Scaggs.
Pianist Adam Schulman is a sensitive and stirring player and one of the brightest lights of the Marcus Shelby Orchestra. Bassist Marcus Shelby, besides leading one of Northern California's most spectacular, innovative big bands, is much in demand as a sideman for his sparkling musicianship and solid, empathetic rhythm work. Propulsive drummer Jeff Mars is as comfortable powering Shelby's big band as he is in small group settings (anyone who caught Mars with guitarist Mimi Fox at Pearl's in June will know what we mean).
